If you have any questions about housing and transportation issues, please contact Brian Fonville, Housing and Transportation Chair, at (650) 497-0645 or fonville@stanford.edu. Sea Change Conference participants are invited to contact Samia at Bay Travel (baytravel@aol.com; 408-253-8615) to facilitate their travel arrangements. Offering the possibility of special rates for lodging in area hotels, air travel to the conference, and local car rentals, Bay Travel is Sea Change's exclusive travel representative.

Lodging
All attendees must make their own hotel reservations. For those interested, a Listing of Local Hotels and Motels contains mileage to campus, price ranges, and contact information (prices are certain to have increased slightly since this page was last updated).

A limited number of rooms at the Palo Alto Sheraton, next to campus, will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The cost is $169 for a single or a double, plus $15 each additional person beyond two, plus tax. To reserve these rooms contact the Sheraton directly, at (650)-328-2800, and request the special NAELS 2000 Conference rate.

For those who would prefer not to stay at a hotel, Sea Change has arranged a number of spaces with Stanford students. If you wish to stay with a Stanford student, you will have the opportunity to make that request on page 1 of the registration system. We hope to be able to accommodate as many people as possible who request this form of lodging.

Getting to the Conference
For those who will be traveling by car, maps and directions to campus (including a searchable map so you can find the Law School - under "Academic and Administrative Buildings - School of Law") at Stanford's Visitor Information site. For those traveling to the conference by air, flying into San Jose International Airport or San Francisco International Airport are the most practical options. San Jose International is a few miles closer to Stanford and less congested. Again, Sea Change recommends using Bay Travel to secure discounted airfare.

The Super Shuttle offers transport to and from San Francisco Airport and costs ~$16-17, $8 per additional person (415-558-8500). The South and East Bay Shuttle offers transport to both the San Jose Airport and San Francisco Airport, and costs ~$17, $8 per additional person (1-800-548-4464; fax 408-226-4444). These do not need to be "reserved" far in advance. Taxis between San Francisco Airport and Stanford typically run about $44; taxis between San Jose Airport and Stanford, about $35.

Getting Around During the Conference

The Stanford campus is rather large. Furthermore, due to high expected attendance, Sea Change itself will be unable to provide effective shuttling to and from area hotels and the Law School. Sea Change therefore recommends that attendees not staying next to or on the Stanford campus procure their own ground-based form of transportation.

Attendees can make these arrangements through Bay Travel (baytravel@aol.com). Marguerite, the Stanford campus shuttle, operates 6 AM - 8PM weekdays only, but does provide effective transport (every 15 minutes) between the campus and the immediate surrounding area, including the Palo Alto Sheraton area and the CalTrain station. The Midnight Express (nothing in common with the movie) runs 7 days a week, from 8 PM through midnight, between campus and Palo Alto. See Stanford Transportation for more information. It is certainly possible to walk from nearby hotels to the Law School; however, be sure to account for the size of the Stanford campus in allocating time to get to the Conference!

For more information, please visit Stanford's Visitor Information page.

Housing with Students
For those interested, we will try to arrange lodging for you with a Stanford student. (We can't promise anything more than floor space, so bring your sleeping bags in this case.) Please let us know the gender of those requesting crash space, and if there are any special needs we should be aware of; also please let us know as soon as possible (preferably by Feb. 18th at the latest) if you would like this kind of lodging. You can do this on our registration page.

If several people want to split a hotel room to save money, we can refer you to our hotels page (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/hds/chs/general/hotel.html); or, you could split a room at the Palo Alto Sheraton -- we have 15 rooms set aside for attendees ($169 per single or double, $15 per additional person, plus 10% tax; 650-328-2800; fax 650-322-0495). You can also get advice on inexpensive area hotels and motels from our travel agent, Samia at Bay Travel (baytravel@aol.org; 408-253-8615). Samia is a sort of travel agent wunderkind who can also help you find the most inexpensive air fare.
